Newtown Design Advisory Board
Town of Newtown Connecticut
Amended Meeting Minutes:
Date:           November 5, 2009
Time:           5:30 p.m.
Location:       31 Pecks Lane

Application:  Newtown Savings Bank

Present at the meeting were: John Trentacosta, James Cotter, William Calderara, George Reichert and Michael Manes

We thought the design approach made sense. The inspiration was 19th century mill buildings.
~
The proposed structure is directly on-axis as one approaches coming down Church Hill, so it will be an important structure in Sandy Hook.
~
The drive aisle around the facade facing the intersection will be mitigated by the fact that it is elevated 6-8 ft above the roadway and will not be visible. The applicant recently informed me that a landscape architect has been retained to better conceal this feature.
~
The drive-thru is positioned on the far side of the building from the intersection.
~
Brick is the predominate material which is appropriate for the context and the building type. The color and texture of the brick~to be selected~will be very important. We suggested a weathered soft pink or rose colored brick as opposed to a sharp edged dark red.
~
Applicant presented two options: a single story and a 2-story depending on program. Either is acceptable to the Board.
~
The drawings presented were schematic and the Board requested more detailed drawings consistent with the design direction the applicant had chosed. The Board also recommends material samples be provided along with the second application.
~
In general the Board supports the design direction the applicant has chosen and recommends an additional review of detailed drawings and materials before~NDAB approval.
